What the ascendant calculator shows

The rising sign, or ascendant, is the zodiac sign on the eastern horizon at the moment of birth. The Midheaven is the highest point of the chart, the cusp of the 10th house. Both come from your date, your time and the latitude and longitude of your birthplace.

The horizon turns through all twelve signs every day, so a rising sign lasts about two hours on average, less or more depending on the latitude and the season. That is why the calculator shows the stretch of the day in which your sign held. It says what each point is; it doesn't interpret it.

Born in Canada?

Whether a time of birth is recorded, and whether it appears on a certificate, depends on the province or territory and on the year. To find out what is on file for you, contact the vital statistics office of the province or territory where you were born. If nothing turns up, the free range check below tests every time that could be right.

Short answers

What do I need to calculate my rising sign?
Your date, time and place of birth. The time matters most, because the rising sign changes about every 2 hours.
What if I only know my birth time roughly?
Use the free range check: enter the earliest and latest time that could be right and it lists every rising sign inside that range, with the time each one starts and ends.
Does it handle daylight saving time?
The time you enter is read as the clock time at your place of birth in Canada, using the historical time zone rules for that date, including daylight saving time, which has varied by province and year. If the clocks went forward and your time falls in the skipped hour, the calculator tells you.
