Sun, Moon and Rising sign (Ascendant)ACThe sign on the eastern horizon at the moment you were born. It is the part of the chart that moves fastest, so it depends most on the birth time.Learn more →: the big three. Narrow it down with your life events
A calculator needs a time. Our report works the other way round: it tests the possible times against the dated events of your life and sends the most likely window, with the evidence and a confidence level. First, the free range check shows how many rising signs fit.

Which of the big three depends on the time?
The rising sign always does: it changes about every 2 hours. The Moon sign does only on dates when the Moon changes sign, which is roughly four dates in ten. The Sun sign does only on the one date a month when the Sun moves into a new sign.
Each card is marked, so you can see where a doubtful birth time could change the result and where it can't.
Born in Canada?
Whether a time of birth is recorded, and whether it appears on a certificate, depends on the province or territory and on the year. To find out what is on file for you, contact the vital statistics office of the province or territory where you were born. If nothing turns up, the free range check below tests every time that could be right.
Short answers
- What is the big three in astrology?
- Your Sun sign, your Moon sign and your rising sign (the Ascendant). They are three points of the birth chart.
- Can I find my big three without a birth time?
- You can find your Sun sign, and your Moon sign on most dates. The rising sign needs a time. The free range check lists every rising sign that fits a range of hours.
- Does it handle daylight saving time?
- The time you enter is read as the clock time at your place of birth in Canada, using the historical time zone rules for that date, including daylight saving time, which has varied by province and year. If the clocks went forward and your time falls in the skipped hour, the calculator tells you.
